Trafi is the competent monitoring authority specified in the Ship Safety Control Act. Trafi monitors compliance with regulations issued on ship safety and is responsible for inspections in accordance with the PSC directive and the inspection directive. Trafi is likewise responsible for reports and the sharing of information based on them and exchange of information.
Monitoring also includes supervision of compliance with maritime safety and good seamanship. As part of this supervision work, Trafi's officials represent Trafi as seafaring experts at maritime courts receiving ship's protests, and at other criminal and civil cases heard at maritime courts, if necessary.
