Endorsement

A certificate of competency issued by a competent authority in the European Economic Area (EEA) to a citizen of the EEA in accordance with the STCW Convention must be recognised. Trafi will issue an endorsement of recognition of the certificate of competency to an applicant on written application.

Trafi can also grant a holder of a certificate of competency issued by a party other than a competent authority in the EEA and meeting the requirements of the STCW Convention permission to serve in a certain capacity on board a Finnish ship.

The following must be enclosed in the written application:

• a certificate of competency issued by another contracting state
• a passport photograph, with name and identity number added on the reverse side, if necessary
• a report on training
• a report on work experience
• a medical declaration
• documentation on knowledge of Finnish legislation related to seafaring at the management level (master, chief officer, chief engineer officer and first engineer officer)
• a passport copy, if necessary.

Trafi will issue an endorsement of recognition of the certificate of competency, which will state its period of validity.
