The Arctic Council's Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment Working Group (PAME) established a new forum to promote the implementation of the Polar Code. The forum convened for the first time on 5 and 6 June 2017 in London. The purpose of the forum is to share the best practices for shipping in the Arctic.

A co-operation forum has been established for the purpose of sharing the best practices for maritime transport in the Arctic. The forum is tasked with increasing exchange of information on the Polar Code and its implementation and bringing together a broad range of information and actors from different fields. Around 50 persons from the Arctic States representing government, shipping companies, insurance companies, classification bodies, the indigenous peoples and environmental organisations attended the first meeting.

"People from all over the world seem pleased that a permanent cooperation body has been formed to support the effective implementation of the Polar Code. The forum's first meeting received a great deal of international attention, and it progressed in a motivating and united spirit The forum was also proposed as a model for the implementation of the Polar Code in the southern polar region," states Forum speaker and Chief Adviser for the Finnish Transport Safety Agency Anita Mäkinen.

The forum is to begin working on an web portal that will promote the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) implementation of the Polar Code and share the best practices for maritime transport in the Arctic.

"Finland's programme for its term as Chairman of the Arctic Council was featured at the meeting," Ms Mäkinen continued.

The Finnish Transport Agency organised the event together with the United States, Canada and PAME's secretariat. Participants from Finland included the chairman, who is from the Finnish Transport Safety Agency, and representatives from the Finnish Transport Agency, ESL Shipping, the Finnish Border Guard and Finland's embassy in London.
