Agreements with classification societies have been renewed

10/6/17, 4:00 PM

The new agreements delegate additional surveying and certification tasks to classification societies. In the future, Trafi will no longer carry out maritime safety surveys for classified ships.

Trafi has amended its agreements with authorised classification societies that carry out ship surveys. The new agreement and its appendices are effective as from 1 October 2017. The new agreements delegate additional surveying and certification tasks to classification societies. The change has allowed completing one of the strategic policies set by Trafi in May 2014 concerning the operating model for the surveys of vessels.

On the basis of surveys they have performed, classification societies may issue certificates in accordance with the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) and the International Convention on Load Lines. Classification societies may also perform approval of documentation and ISM audits.

For the time being, Trafi will continue to perform all ISPS surveys of vessels, grant related certificates as well as issue international tonnage certificates.

Trafi's updated decree on ship surveys entered into force on 1 July 2017. Surveys for vessels whose classification has been laid down in an agreement between a shipowner and a classification society authorised by Trafi must be sought from the classification society. In practice, this means that Trafi will no longer carry out maritime safety surveys for classified vessels in the future.

All classification societies will have the same tasks

Since all agreements made with classification societies are identical, the number of delegated tasks is the same, no matter which classification society the shipowner is dealing with.
