European drone experts scan the future in Helsinki

11/21/17, 9:00 AM

Drone experts from all over Europe are gathering to Helsinki today and tomorrow, 21–22 November 2017, for the main European event on unmanned aviation. The High Level Conference on Drones discusses the future development in the field, integration of drones into airspace, and the new commercial opportunities that drones can offer.

”We are very glad to organise this event in Finland, as it shows that our expertise in unmanned aviation is appreciated at an international level. We have built a liberal set of regulations based on operator responsibility, which has enabled us to be among leaders in this sector,” says Pekka Henttu, Director of Trafi’s Aviation Sector.

The conference, jointly organised by Trafi and the European Aviation Safety Agency EASA, will specifically address the future development trends in unmanned aviation, coordination between manned and unmanned operations, as well as new technological solutions and business models. Moreover, the event will aim to find common approaches to any challenges faced and develop guidelines for the future.

Fixed-wing, multicopters, airships and quadcopters – drones take many shapes and offer a wide range of opportunities

”To many, a drone means a small quadcopter, but in fact the field covers much more and there are drones of all sizes. For this reason, it is extremely useful for the development in this sector to exchange experiences on new kinds of business models, such as parcel deliveries or taxi services offered by autonomous drones,” says Chief Adviser Jukka Hannola of Trafi.

The conference will host up to 400 visitors from 30 countries. Among the participants are Violeta Bulc, European Commissioner for Transport and Mobility; Patrick Ky, EASA Executive Director; and Anne Berner, Finnish Minister of Transport and Communications. The event will also be attended by a wide range of representatives from Finnish and international organisations, research institutes, regulatory authorities and industry operators .

The conference is held in English and broadcasted live online. On the social media, you can follow the event with the hashtag #drone2017.
