The new legislation that came into effect in July makes it easier to apply for your first driving licence. You can now apply for a driving licence directly in Trafi's electronic first driving licence service.
The changes to the Driving Licence Act and the driving examination took effect from 1 July. In the new first driving licence service, you can be granted a driving licence permit, which will remain in effect for three years. You will need the permit for the tests required as part of the driving examination.
Under the new system, you are no longer required to present a medical certificate when applying for your first driving licence. In most cases you only need to give an assurance that you meet the necessary health requirements. This has made it possible to introduce a system in which you can apply for your first driving licence electronically.
“The service in which you can apply for your first driving licence is part of our project to build a system where all driving licence applications can be made electronically. At the end of this year, electronic services will be extended to cover applications where you also need a health assessment provided by a doctor,” explains Johanna Simkin, Development Manager at Trafi.
You need to meet certain requirements before you can apply for a driving licence in the electronic service. The most important of them is that you have not yet had any driving licence in Finland or in any other country. You can log into the service using your online bank identifiers or mobile identification. You must have your permanent address in mainland Finland.
