As the new decree on fuel symbols enters into force today, the 12th of October 2018, the new European symbols will be displayed at service stations in addition to the old ones. Fuel pumps will continue to show the familiar national symbols for fuels but also the new symbols, so care should be taken when fuelling vehicles. All new vehicles are also required to have the same symbols.

Interim results of the Arctic Challenge research project propose the first solutions for enabling automation of road transport in winter conditions. Early winter testing will continue in October and November, when previous results are tested again.
The reforms to driving instruction brought changes also in the acquisition of mopeds and motorbikes licences. Four out of five people pass the new motorcycle handling test on their first attempt. Only around one third of people, however, pass the moped theory test first time.
The driver training reforms that came into force in July have also had an impact on driving instruction statistics. The changes that focused on the evaluation of comprehensive driving skills and a wide-ranging understanding of traffic situation have made the examinations even more demanding, which can also been seen in the shares of students who passed their first attempt
Rail transport is undergoing big changes in both Finland and the EU as a whole. There is no going back to the way things were before, not even to maintain the status quo. Commuter train transports have been opened up to competition for a while now, and new tram lines are being introduced to Tampere and Helsinki. Legislation is changing, the digital revolution is increasing in scope. The question on everyone’s mind at Trafi's first rail transport stakeholder event 26th of September at Finlandia Hall: how can we ensure the safety and smoothness of rail transports amidst these changes?
Trafi has chosen a new driving licence manufacturer. Gemalto Oy was selected as Trafi’s driving licence supplier on the basis of a competitive tender. The contract period starts in April 2019 and runs for four years.

The theory of risk-guided steering of agency functions has now also been explored in a scientific publication. New doctoral thesis continues in the same vein as the Finnish Transport Safety Agency’s ‘From Knowledge to Action’ project. The approach has been utilised especially in aviation, but is also useful in other kinds of organisations.

Trafi has granted the first taxi transport licences and tax driving licences under the new Act on Transport Services. The driver training reform, which entered into force on 1 July has also caused an upsurge in applications for driving instruction permits.
Aviation will be restricted in the city of Helsinki and in the surrounding areas from 6 am on Sunday 15 July to 8 am on Tuesday 17 July 2018. The restrictions apply to all aviation, including unmanned aviation.
First registrations of watercraft totalled 2,571 in January-June 2018, an increase of 1.7% on a year-on-year basis.
In the first six months of 2018, 69,600 first registrations of cars were recorded, representing an 8.0% increase year on year. The number of cars with an alternative power source registered between January and June exceeded the total over 12 months last year.

As the Act on Transport Services entered into force on Sunday, 1 July 2018, the submission of applications for the new taxi licences got off to a brisk start. Trafi received almost 700 applications for taxi licences and more than 200 notifications of provision of taxi or goods transport services during that day.

The taxi services reform will also affect the taxi journeys for which customers with disabilities and restricted functional capacity pay themselves. The pricing of special services will be liberated, and you should thus compare the services of different taxi companies in advance, Trafi and the Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority remind customers. The customer must be informed of the price of the service before the booking is confirmed.
