Driving a decommissioned vehicle will incur a special tax as of 12/1/2017; previously it was possible to get off with a fine. Under the new legislation it will be possible to keep track of decommissioned vehicles through automatic monitoring. Motorists should make sure in connection with the purchase of a used car, for instance, that the car has been registered for use in traffic.
Delays are expected in vehicle and watercraft data updates in Trafi’s e-Services on 19 November from 8 am to 5 pm due to maintenance work. You can use the vehicle and watercraft services as usual, but any reported data will be updated in the service only after 5 pm. If the confirmation page opens at the end, your data entry has succeeded.

The Finnish Transport Agency and Trafi have launched the Arctic Challenge research project which aims to solve problems caused to the automation of road traffic by northern winter conditions. The project involves carrying out field experiments with automated vehicles in the Aurora test environment located in Fell Lapland in 2017–2019. Research agreements have been concluded with three groups consisting of companies and research institutions.
The new agreements delegate additional surveying and certification tasks to classification societies. In the future, Trafi will no longer carry out maritime safety surveys for classified ships.
The Finnish Transport Safety Agency announces that an operating authorizations for air services between Finland and China (Chongqing, Guangzhou, Nanjing and Xi’an as well as Rovaniemi-Beijing) are available.

From the viewpoint of waterway transport, last summer was safer than the previous one and according to Trafi's estimate, this may turn out to be the safest boating year in history. By the end of August, 22 people had been killed in water transport accidents, which is almost less than half the number for the same period last year.
The EU-wide eCall emergency call service for passenger cars and vans is progressing. Cars that automatically make a direct call to the emergency call centre in the event of an accident will be seen on the roads next year. From the beginning of October, all emergency call centres within the Union should be ready to receive messages sent automatically by cars in accident situations.
In addition to tread depth, drivers should also pay attention to the condition of studding. You should always check the condition of the tyres before you change them, but you should also monitor your tyres throughout the driving season, and rotate them when necessary. A recent Trafi study examined the differences in the condition of worn-out studded tyres and the associated risk factors.
