Health requirements in road traffic

Trafi prepares instructions for physicians on the assessment of the driving capacity of drivers of vehicles in road traffic. Trafi has no jurisdiction to rule on individual assessments of persons in road traffic.

The police are responsible for monitoring the driving ability and driving capacity of drivers and may decide on related measures, such as imposing a driving ban.

A medical certificate on driving capacity must be submitted in connection with applying for a driving licence. A medical examination is required:

  • When applying for or renewing an existing driving licence
  • When a doctor has ordered the person to a medical examination earlier than usual
  • When required by the police.
