Trafi maintains a Traffic Affairs Register, which contains information on Finnish vessels engaged in merchant shipping (formerly known as the Register of Ships). Ship registration data is maintained by Trafi and the State Department of Åland. Trafi maintains ship registration data throughout Finland, with the exception of the Åland region. The State Department of Åland is responsible for ships registered in Åland.
Finnish vessels at least 15 metres in length must be registered in the Traffic Affairs Register before they may used in merchant shipping.
At the owner's request, a Finnish vessel at least 10 metres in length that is to be used in merchant shipping may also be entered in the register (voluntary registration).
Ships entered in the Register of Fishing Vessels must also be entered in the Traffic Affairs Register, provided that they fulfil the aforementioned requirements for registration.
Every passenger vessel in international traffic and every cargo vessel in international traffic with a gross tonnage of 500 and above, and built after 1 July 2004, must have a Continuous Synopsis Record (CSR). CSR data is kept in the CSR register.
Decisions concerning the registration of ships and the recording of title to ships must be entered in the Traffic Affairs Register. The data entered also includes the name, home port, signal letters, IMO number, type, dimensions, builder and purpose of the ship.
In addition, any mortgages on the ship and information on any foreclosure, seizure or confiscation of security, declaration of bankruptcy by the owner, and changes to the above information shall be entered in the register.
If the applicant’s title is subject to a condition restricting their right of transfer or mortgage, this shall also be entered in the register.
Similar data on ships under construction shall be entered in the register.
Yachts and boats at least 5.5 metres in length must be registered in the Traffic Affairs Register (formerly known as the Watercraft Register).

Seafarer marine service, competency and proficiency information
Trafi maintains a Traffic Affairs Register, which contains information on seafarer marine service, training and competency/proficiency (formerly known as the Register of Seafarers).
The following information is entered in the register:
Marine service data entered in the register comes directly from shipping companies either electronically or on notification forms.
Training certificate information is entered in connection with competency applications and competencies are entered in the register upon being issued.
