Upgrading a motorcycle driving licences

A category A1 driving licence can be upgraded to a category A2 driving licence at the age of 18 at the earliest, and a category A2 driving licence can be upgraded to category A at the age of 20 at the earliest.

However, if you have not had a category A2 driving licence previously, you can’t get a category A driving licence until you are 24 years old.

Motorcycle driving licences can be upgraded to higher motorcycle driving licence categories by

  • attending driving instruction or
  • attending driving instruction and passing the driving examination.

Upgrading a category A1 driving licence

To upgrade from category A1 to category A2 by driving instruction alone, you must

  • be 18 years old
  • have two years of driving experience on a category A1 motorcycle, and
  • have completed the required driving instruction (total of seven hoursa, of which two hours of theory lessons and five hours of driving lessons, of which four hours on public roads)

You will receive an instruction certificate for your driving instruction, which you must take to an Ajovarma service point with your driving licence application.

If you want a category A2 driving licence before two years of driving experience on a category A1 motorcycle has been fulfilled.

You need to complete the driving instruction and pass a driving examination (theory test, handling test and driving test). You still need to be at least 18 years old.

If you have a category A1 driving licence and you want to upgrade it directly to category A, you need to have completed the required driving instruction and have passed the driving examination. You must be at least 24 years old.

Upgrading category A2 driving licence

  • be 20 years old,
  • have two years of driving experience on a category A2 motorcycle, and
  • have completed the required driving instruction (total of seven hours, of which two hours of theory lessons and five hours of driving lessons, of which four hours on public roads).

You can also get a category A driving licence without demonstrating your driving experience by completing the required driving instruction and passing the driving examination. You must be at least 24 years old.

Motorcycle training licence

Trafi can issue you with a training licence. That allows you to practise riding your motorcycle on public roads. A training licence can be issued if you are looking to upgrade your driving licence by taking the driving examination. You can then practise independently without an instructor. Upgrading a driving licence

You can upgrade your driving licence within Group 1 (AM/120, AM/121, T, LT, A1, A2, A, B, BE) through Trafi’s e-Services. Using the service requires that you already have a right to drive in Group 1 and that no attachments are needed for the upgrading of the licence (such as medical certificate, consent of guardians, certificate of driving instruction).

If attachments are needed for upgrading the licence, the upgrade must be carried out at Ajovarma. More information on the requirements of using the upgrading service is available in the e-Services.

You can always also upgrade your driving licence at Ajovarma’s licence service point.
