Vehicle registration plate

The registration plate of a car includes the registration plate ID embossed in black on a white reflective field. The registration plate ID consists of two or three letters and a maximum three-digit number. A dash appears between the letter and number series. In addition to the actual registration plate ID, there are twelve stars on a blue field at the left-hand corner of the EU registration plate and the nationality ID FIN below them.

Currently, vehicles are automatically issued EU registration plates, but if you want, you may request an old-fashioned registration plate without the EU ID for your car.

A vehicle used by the President of Finland may be equipped with a sign including the coat of arms of Finland instead of a registration plate.
